One of the questions that’s been bugging us for years now is, how many Super Bowls has gone into overtime? It seems like every year there is a new champion that goes on to challenge the reigning champs. So how many has this happened to? Well, you can count the number of times when a Super Bowl has gone into overtime from what the books say and from what we all know – it’s close to 100%.
When overtime was introduced, it was to help give extra incentive to the teams: Each team would get an extra point if they went into overtime and won. This made the game more exciting! Of course, overtime just added more confusion to the fans, who were already frustrated by the lack of points in the first place!
Of course, this rule didn’t stay around forever: In fact, after a few years it got watered down a bit and wasn’t as effective as it needed to be. Then the NFL added a “SB” or Super Bowl point to the overtime game and watered it down even more. Now, teams play for only one point and overtime just isn’t as fun.
But it hasn’t gone away completely: and this year is a big one with the possibility of two playoff teams going into overtime. So how many of these super bowl overtime games have actually gone into overtime? Well, there’s no real way to tell because no one really knows how many times a super bowl has gone into overtime.
Some people will say that it’s close to double-digit numbers, but who knows? Maybe the next time they play the same team they beat in the playoffs will have a different outcome! We’ll have to wait and see! But it is interesting to note that there have been some changes to overtime lately.
For instance, in last year’s championship game between the Saints and the Ravens: there were three overtimes! The only way one team could win! That was crazy! And then the next year, the Vikings played the hated Eagles and they played back and forth in overtime and won! So you can expect those games to get playing again soon. So, how many of these great Super Bowls have you ever seen where overtime happened?
I can remember the infamous overtime against the Cowboys in Dallas back in 2021: This was a Super Bowl which went beyond regulation and it looked as if the Cowboys had the game and the rest of the NFL wanted to take them out of the playoffs. They nearly did! But with two minutes left on the clock and the Cowboys holding a one-point lead, they finally kicked the field goal to tie the game! Then they ran a clock play and the Eagles kicked a field goal to take the lead! It was a close, thrilling, and exciting game to watch.
Let’s not forget the most recent event: to go overtime and cost a winning team the victory! Last year, the infamous “replay” game! It seemed as if the Giants were going to get away with it, but then the replay happened! The call was wrong, the play was ruled illegal, and the Giants lost! How many of these have you seen happen?
I can only count to four, but there have been many others that have been played recently.
